1. Can you describe MW Makes in 5 words?
Traditional craft, contemporary design, functional
2. How did you get the idea for MW Makes?
I've always loved leather goods and after attending a leather workshop a few years ago, I started making small items for myself. I saw setting up MW Makes as a great opportunity to produce and offer handmade leather items at an affordable price.
3. What are your favourite parts of running MW Makes?
Meeting like minded individuals and being part of this designer maker community.
4. What does a typical day look like for you?
I'm currently working full time as an architect so it's pretty varied. I'll fit in making leather items in the evenings or weekends, whenever I have orders or an event to prepare for.
Juggling full time work with MW Makes has been difficult at times, but I quite like the challenge of applying to take part in an event and then just having to get it done!
The leather I use is all vegetable tanned leather, rather than the more commonly found chrome tanned leather. As the name suggests, veg tan leather is tanned using vegetable matter, rather than chemicals. This high quality leather ages beautifully and forms a patina over time - meaning products are built to last!
I love that The London Smiths are so passionate about championing local London brands. It's so difficult to compete with high street brands so having another platform to reach potential customers is fantastic.
I would say just start making and getting your products out there. It's never going to be perfect, but you'll learn a lot about the process as you go along.
I'd like the business to grow a little and see my items in more independent shops!
10. Is there anything else The London Smiths customers should know about you?!
I love plants, my feed is full of them..
